Category: 9-12 (Age Group) Graphic Novel
Synopsis: In Pumpkins County, weird things happen every day, but nobody ever makes a fuss. Nobody, that is, except the Creeps: Carol, a big-city girl new to Pumpkins County, who finds kindred spirits in Mitchell (monster expert), Jarvis (military brat with logistics know-how), and Rosario (girly girl on the outside, muscle underneath). The Creeps are on the case to figure out the spooky mysteries and still get to class on time. Last week it was a pudding monster. This week, it’s killer frogs—reanimated from the team’s biology class dissection experiment. Who’s behind the Frankenfrog attacks? The Creeps will track down the answers!
Review: This is my first ever graphic novel that I have read. It shouldn’t have been. I was not happy reading this, it wasn’t a very good story although I did like the graphics and I believe it could have had so much potential.
You get these four kids, all smart in their own ways. I also like how the bigger girl is the girly one and knows her clothes/fashion. That was cute. They solve crimes, but the town doesn’t like that or them.
All the kids call each other names in this book, why? I don’t get it and don’t think it’s necessary. He could have done a bully theme without the names, and creeps…why call them creeps?
They do solve the crime of the frogs, which is a great idea and are kinda creepy. I am a fan of anything Frankenstein related. It’s a fast easy read and quite frankly if you are looking for something to get your kids to read this could be it. Kids could find it funny.
I do also like the diversity in this book. That is one of the reasons it got a 2 rating. The kids are clearly from different back grounds which is lacking in a lot of stories for this age group. So this part of it is a HUGE win.
Maybe I am bias because I am older and don’t like name calling? Could be. Will other people like this book, for sure. It wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever read that is for sure but I will not read it again or allow my son to read it. I think there are way better choices out there for graphic novels. Maybe the 2nd could be better? This is the first is what looks like a series.
